Last year, like most every other year before, I went supply shopping, clothes shopping and shoes shopping to prepare for the incoming school year. This year, it is totally different! Like... the pandemic keeping everyone from going places different. So instead of shopping for myself, to be ready for the school year, I am overhauling my room with my sister https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ih35V5ftc-Y (yeah, I should mention, we share a room)... So, we are painting the walls in our room, getting desks, matching comforters and room lights. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Lf2QhFT4X0c

Because this school year is online, I want my room to be the best looking on the zoom screen. I might not get to go school shopping this year, but I can focus all of my energy into what is important to me at the time.

Getting ready for school is usually stressful enough without a pandemic to keep in mind, so the schools in our district have decided to proceed online. Personally, I am looking forward to online school because I know it will be safer considering COVID-19. Online schooling will be very different, and most likely will require some adjustment for students participating.

During the summer months, I usually have more than enough time to edit my Youtube (sierra amarissa) and Instagram (raynedits_) videos, but I have to make time for these things during the school year. To get ready, I am making a schedule to follow during the school year to keep everything organized to my preference. For example, when my morning alarm goes off at 7:15 a.m.:

  1. I will be waiting for my sister to be finished in the bathroom. During this time, I will be making my bed and doing a light exercise to get my heart going early in the morning. I am not a morning person, so a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, to wake up and besides, exercise in the morning makes the rest of anyone’s day so much better, well, that is my opinion anyway, although I think there is some medical truth to it.

  2. Next, it is my turn to occupy the bathroom. I shower, wash my face and brush my teeth.

  3. After my time in the bathroom, I will get my clothes on and hair done. The clothes and hairstyle I would wear that day will already be figured out from the night before to avoid any unnecessary stress. You should try it, if you don’t already do this, it will save so much time, energy and like I said, unnecessary stress, who needs that? Especially in the mornings.. Not me.. .. and not you either.

  4. Then, I plan to be in the kitchen, putting together a healthy breakfast to get me going through the day (a fruit smoothie or oatmeal). with the remaining time.

  5. I will assemble my school supplies and thoughts (gotta get the mind right) for the day.

  6. Then I open my chromebook and begin my online schooling.

  7. After school, I will finally get time to edit my videos and do any given homework.

Since I was little, I’ve been looking forward to my senior year of high school. I’ve thought up so many scenarios in my head about what it would be like, but never did I think I’d have to start my senior year from home... yeah, the pandemic did that!

While it’s not the ideal situation, there are many things I’m happy about. Usually I’d be at school from 7:45am-2:40pm, but this year I will be done with school by noon everyday and for that I’m grateful.

This gives me more time to work on college applications and hopefully spend time with my family and friends. Since I want to be a dance major in college, I have to schedule a time to take my headshots and action shots for my portfolio. I also have to choreograph about 5 different pieces to audition for each school--I know it's gonna be hard but it's honestly kinda fun!

Since I wasn’t going to be at school to help with welcoming the freshmen, I decided to make a welcome video for them instead. My school gave me the topic of how to stay organized. Here are some of the tips that I shared with them, that I’ve been using:

  • Create a google drive folder for all your classes so you can easily find your assignments

  • Rename all of your assignments with your name & date

  • Use a planner or agenda so you can check off all your tasks

  • Have a clean, designated area to do your schoolwork

I’ve also decided to offer virtual dance lessons so that young kids have a fun activity they can do from home (@viverethemovement). I’m currently working out a schedule to help me stay balanced and motivated to accomplish all of these. It’s important especially during these times to have a set schedule so that you don’t feel stressed or overwhelmed. It is also important to have a visual of everything you need to get done so nothing gets missed.

I’ve also made a list of things to be excited about like christmas, turning 18, senior prom, and graduation so that I can have things to look forward to whenever I feel down about online school.

If 2020 has taught me anything so far, it’s to not take life for granted. Even though this isn’t the picture perfect version of senior year I had in my head, that doesn’t mean it won’t still be good.

To all my fellow class of 2021 seniors, we’re gonna make it.
